Puppy

your new family member

Having a puppy in the house is one of the best experiences you can have. They are all-consuming, cute balls of fun and entertainment – watching a puppy play with a cardboard box is better than any Netflix series and way more binge worthy. You feel like the BEST person in the world because puppy wants to be with you all the time and follows you everywhere. Who knew that the one thing you were missing in your life was a puppy in the toilet with you? And then they snuggle up to you and fall asleep and it is the best feeling in the world.

But they are also all-consuming, cute balls of havoc-wreaking nightmare. They pee and poop everywhere, chew stuff, destroy stuff, steal stuff, dig holes in your garden, pull the stuffing out of your cushions. They bite, jump, get possessed by the devil and you are left wondering what the hell you have done. If you haven’t cried at least once then, frankly, you’re not doing it properly.

Having a puppy is like having another full time job (and don’t be fooled by anyone telling you otherwise) so the best thing you can do for your puppy (and your sanity) is get long term support on board from day one, so you can minimise the downsides and focus on the enjoyable bits.

The best time is before puppy comes home. That first 2 hour session can be used to ensure you are fully prepared for puppy coming home. We will discuss sleeping, toilet training, diet, toys, puppy biting, socialisation, training methods, environmental management strategies – anything and everything you need to know about raising a puppy. We will also discuss typical breed behaviours and breed needs, and what is important for you to achieve with your puppy – it is a truly comprehensive foundation for puppy life. If puppy is already home, this session will be spent ensuring the right foundations are in place, making adjustments to help with some of the struggles you might already be having, and anything else from the list above that needs addressing.

I usually recommend every other week for the initial 6 sessions. This gives you enough time to get the training underway but it’s not so long that you are struggling in between sessions.

The true meaning of socialisation is sorely misunderstood. I’d prefer to think about it as the ‘brain wiring period’. This is a period of time when puppy’s brain is wiring at the fastest rate it ever will. What I mean by ‘wiring’ is ‘learning’. They are learning all about the world around them and they are learning every second of every minute of the day that they are awake. We want them to learn that the world is a safe place where they don’t need to worry about anything. Socialisation is about careful, controlled exposure to the world at a distance where they can calmly observe and receive DELICIOUS treats while they do so. This type of exposure builds a resilience to novelty so when they are exposed to something new in the future, their default response is “well, new things have always meant good things in the past so it’s probably nothing to be worried about”. It is far more about exposing them to different sights, sounds, situations, and environments than it is about socialising them with lots and lots of random dogs and people. Socialisation isn’t something that can be ticked off the list by attending one group puppy class a week for 6-8 weeks, it is so much more than that and requires a huge amount of input from you outside of any training sessions. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of group training classes after you’ve had your 1-1s – this gives you a GREAT opportunity to practise your skills in a more distracting environment and can really take your foundational training to another level entirely.

With 1-1s, you get a more bespoke service focusing on your individual puppy (taking breed needs and their individual personality into consideration), your home environment, your lifestyle, your needs. These just aren’t things that can be catered for in a group setting.

Absolutely – my first session is designed around just this. If you haven’t found your puppy yet I can also help you choose the right breed for your lifestyle and needs, and advise on what you should be looking for in the right breeders.

No, but this package has been created based on my experience of what I have seen gives puppy guardians the best chance of success. It gives you the highest level of ongoing support for the first 18-20 months of puppy’s life with you.
